A D.I.Y. tattoo kit that can be purchased by practically anyone, is predicted to become a hit in 2015. These unique tattoo kits are referred to as “stick and poke” at home tattoo kits. The method requires the user to dip a needle into the ink and then poke it into their skin, hence the name. However, the FDA has many worries about these D.I.Y. tattoo kits.
Style magazine has predicted it to become incredibly popular in the New Year because of its affordable price point, only $40. Style magazine has received some backlash for encouraging people to use the stick and poke method because of the potential dangers that come with it.
In no way should you be encouraging anyone to tattoo themselves that is inexperienced, outside of a sterile shop, and not done by a professional,’ user Kayti Hurd commented on Style.com’s Facebook page.
‘Tattoos are lifelong markings, not some trend that you can ditch the next year when something new comes along. Shame.’
So what are the dangers according to the FDA? In a nutshell, the most common problem is small bacteria or microbiological contaminants could be in the bottles of ink. This could happen during the manufacturing and packing process, or even when the inks are being prepared for use. If the ink contains any microbiological contaminants when it enters the skin it can lead to dangerous infections. This can also result if the area is not prepped properly before beginning the tattoo. Even after the area heals it can leave unsightly scarring.
So, it seems that even though the D.I.Y. tattoo kit has an awesome price, it can be potentially dangerous if you don’t take the right precautions and aren’t sure of what you’re doing. What do you think? Will you try the new stick and poke method to save money, or will you just trust your Canadian Ink tattoo artist to get the job done right the first time?
